The Women’s Wing at the Galilee Medical Center

An Obstetrics and Gynecology Wing has been inaugurated at the Galilee Medical Center, named after the philanthropist, social entrepreneur and businesswoman Raya Strauss Ben Dror.
The naming of the Wing after her is intended for cherishing the long-standing contribution of Raya Strauss Ben Dror to the second largest hospital in the North.
Since 2008, Raya has been serving as President of the Friends Association of the Galilee Medical Center. Throughout these years, she has donated tens of millions of NIS that enabled, among other things, the establishment of the Hospital’s new Cardiac Institute, Women’s Wing and Research Institute.
In addition, she assisted in the acquisition of world-leading medical equipment and technologies, the recruitment of high-level specialist physicians and the formation of an ambience that encourages the patients’ recovery.

National Projects – the “Magen Haim” (Life Guard) Project

The Project is an initiative of the National Initiatives Philanthropic Corporate Fund, which was founded by the Israeli philanthropists in 2015. The purpose of the Fund’s establishment was to establish projects that would have a national impact. The first project that was chosen by the Fund was an initiative to reduce the level of infections in hospitals – a phenomenon that causes the death of between 4,000 – 6,000 patients annually. Following Raya’s involvement in the Fund’s activities – the Galilee Medical Center was selected to partake in the infection reduction pilot project, together with the Sheba Medical Center. The “Magen Haim” Project took place between 2017 and 2018 and it instigated a significant reduction in the number of acquired infections in both Hospitals. Even after the Project’s termination in 2018, the Hospital continues to further projects that were developed while reducing the contagion with acquired infections.

The Research Institute of the Faculty of Medicine

As part of the activities of the Faculty of Medicine in Safed, about 60% of the students are carrying out their practical studies in the Galilee Medical Center. Prof. Kaveh, the former President of the Bar Ilan University, contacted Raya with a request for a donation for the establishment of a University Research Institute within the Hospital’s premises. A research institute will enable the Faculty’s development within the confines of the Hospital and it will particularly assist in attracting physicians to work and carry out research in it. The Institute was established at a total cost of $5 million, contributed jointly by Raya (in the amount of $2 million) and another anonymous donor and with the support of the Ministry for the Development of the Negev and Galilee. The Institute was launched in 2019.

Excelling Physicians to the Galilee Medical Center

According to official research and data, the residents of remote settlements and localities will live on average fewer years compared with residents of Central Israel – yet another unfortunate indication attesting to the gap in the quality of public medical services. In order to alter this reality and improve medicine in the Western Galilee, we are working to strengthen medicine and bring in excelling physicians. This is very significant since remote hospitals suffer from a severe shortage of physicians which is manifested in staffing shortages in numerous areas. Many times, residents of the geographic periphery will be forced to travel to hospitals in Central Israel in order to attend appointments with specialist physicians,

Promoting Accessibility to Medical Services for the Residents

Many studies prove the connection between an aesthetic well-kept environment and recovery and relief of pain and anxiety, as a result of treatments and tests. The Friends Association of the Galilee Medical Center incorporates art in the public spaces and departments of the Medical Center, establishes therapeutic gardens and play areas that are safe for children and improves waiting and accommodation spaces for the wellbeing of the patients, visitors and staff.

Raising Awareness for a Healthy Lifestyle.

“Spirit of the Galilee” assists the Friends Association in connecting the community to the Galilee Medical Center and raising awareness of a healthy lifestyle by means of activities in the community, including: health fairs, workshops and lectures held by the best specialists of the Medical Center, which take place at population centers in the Galilee, in cooperation with the municipal authorities and voluntary organizations pertaining to all sectors.
